UserTesting provides crowd-sourced usability testing services to website owners quickly and inexpensively. Website designers, developers, marketers and usability experts can use the service to receive feedback on client websites. Tester feedback consists of a Flash video of a typical user within specified demographics interacting with the site. Testers also supply written summaries with suggestions for improvement.
Tester applicants must be at least 18 years old and have a PC or Mac that meets UserTesting’s minimum requirement. Although most applicants are within the United States, applicants from elsewhere who have an Internet connection adequate for uploading large files are also welcome. All potential testers must fill out a one-page demographics form, install the latest version of Java and use UserTesting’s browser-based recorder. A microphone is necessary once accepted for paying jobs.
Testers are paid $10 for each job. Jobs consist of a 15 to 20 minute recording and written answers to four questions. If a dissatisfied client requests a refund, neither UserTesting nor the tester gets paid. Compensation is paid daily to the tester's Paypal account for the prior week's jobs.
