Peopleperhour is sometimes referred to as the eBay of business outsourcing. It is a high-profile marketplace for businesses to advertise freelance jobs and for freelance workers to bid on those available jobs. Information technology, the Internet, and marketing and advertising are the most strongly represented sectors. Contacts and payments are carried out through the website. Freelancers can post a profile and develop positive ratings based on previous jobs in order to increase their chances of winning future jobs. One nice touch is that newly registered freelancers can import positive feedback from previous work done outside Peopleperhour to boost their profiles. Peopleperhour posts data on awarded jobs and average hourly rates for many job types to encourage professional-quality pricing and standards.
Freelancers must register and create a profile. Although the majority of freelancers are UK-based, registration is open to international workers. A PayPal account and secondary payment method such as a bank account are requested. Terms and conditions are extensive in keeping with professional-level services, so freelancers should understand them thoroughly before registering.
Although registration is free, freelancers choose from among three membership levels whose fees, if applicable, are deducted only once workers receive compensation from client jobs. Each level defines a different set of contract terms related to matters such as the number of bids a freelance worker can submit per month and Peopleperhour.com’s commission rate. For example, the lowest tier has no monthly fee, but allows only 10 bids per month in two categories and charges a 10% commission. By contrast, the highest tier has a monthly fee of about $23.50 and permits 80-plus bids in an unlimited number of categories while charging only 4.5 percent commission. Payments to international freelancers are made through PayPal and are processed twice per week. Bank transfers are also available.
