oDesk is a global online portal that connects freelance contractors with employers seeking outsourced services. Job categories include: web and software development, writing, translation, design and multimedia, administrative support, customer service, information and network systems, and accounting and bookkeeping.

You need to be at least 18 years old to register with oDesk. Registration is open to applicants in most locations around the world, except where specific laws, restrictions or embargoes prohibit participation. So before applying, make sure there’s no red tape in your way.
To start earning money with oDesk, the first thing that you need to do is create a profile. You can do this online at the oDesk website. Your profile will act as a detailed resume for potential clients and contractors to browse. Here, you can include details about your education, experience and even portfolio material if applicable.
You’ll also want to include your rate of pay. As a freelance contractor, you are free to set your own fees and hours. You decide – how much is your time worth?
Make sure that you optimize your profile’s presentation and content so that it is an accurate reflection of just how awesome you are. Make a good impression!
Once finished, submit your profile for review. You’ll be notified as soon as your profile goes live. Now, let the bidding begin!
Employers around the world post thousands of jobs every day. You are ready to start browsing the list and bidding on jobs that interest you. Both flat rate and hourly jobs are available.
Applying for jobs is always free. However, oDesk does limit the number of jobs a new contractor can apply for. A new contractor, who has no feedback and has passed no skills tests, can apply for 2 to 5 jobs at a time. A contractor who has taken 4 or more tests, or has earned a feedback score of 4.0 or higher, can apply to 20 jobs at one time.
The company advises to start slow. Try out small jobs first to build some positive feedback, experience and familiarity with the company and its processes. Then you can go after the bigger fish.
Employers will choose to virtually interview the contractors who they are interested in. Once you ace the interview, you’re ready to start work.
Both employers and contractors are able to submit ratings. These are essential to your success on oDesk. When you are chosen for a job, make sure you follow the employer’s instructions carefully and complete the task to the best of your ability. Positive ratings will lead to more and more work in the future.
Pay rates vary, of course, based on the type of work, your skill level, work history and reputation. If you’re having trouble deciding what to charge, check out what other contractors with similar skills are charging, and price yourself accordingly.
