What’s Internet marketing?
Before we understand affiliate marketing we must first do a quick overview of Internet marketing. In it’s simplest form, Internet marketing is the promotion and advertisement of products and services by using the Internet. One example of Internet marketing is banner advertising. For example, the ads to the right of your Facebook page, or the ads on YouTube videos, or even the small ads you see on the right of the Google search results page – all of that is internet advertising.
While there’s a lot more to Internet advertising than our limited description outlines, that’s all you’ll need to understand for now. It’s just important that you recognize some of the ways Internet marketers are influencing you to buy products every single day.
What’s affiliate marketing?
In most cases, an Internet marketer works for a big company with an established product line. They are experts in the digital world, so the company has entrusted them with the task of marketing their products online.
Affiliate marketers are a little different. They don’t work for a big company in the sense that they’re on the company’s payroll. Instead, they work with the company’s marketing department to drive sales and get paid for results. In that sense, they’re a little like freelancers.
Affiliate marketing is when an individual promotes or advertises a company’s product for a portion of the sales revenue. In other words, affiliate marketers are literally “affiliates” or sales agents of a company’s marketing department and get paid on commissions of the sales that they generate from marketing products online.
