Demand Media is always looking for new and talented freelancers to join their community. Currently, there are openings for work-from-home freelance writers, filmmakers and copy editors. If you’re interested in applying, have your resume and writing sample ready and continue reading!

Getting Started

You must be at least 18 years old and live in the United States, Canada or the U.K. to become a content provider. Registration is free, and freelancers must consent to the terms of the contributor’s agreement.

Along with your submission of the online application, you’ll also need to submit an up-to-date resume and a writing sample. If you don’t have a writing sample, try composing a simple how-to article on any topic you’re familiar with and feel comfortable writing about.

As soon as you submit your application, you’ll immediately receive a confirmation e-mail. Processing times for applications will vary, depending on the amount of work that is available and the number of applicants at the time. The process could take as little as a few hours or up to a week.

Once you application is reviewed, you’ll receive an e-mail that will tell you whether or not you are accepted. If you’re accepted, you can log in immediately and start browsing through all the available work.

Earning Money

Writers freelancing with Demand Media Studios write made-for-the-Internet text articles that appear on brand-name websites. The company has hundreds of thousands of available titles for you to claim.

For your first 3 articles, you’ll be assigned a senior copy editor to help ease you into the process. Your editor will provide detailed feedback and tips and tricks of the trade so that you can improve as a Demand Media writer. These 3 articles must be completed before you can move on to any more titles.

Your editor will rate each of your articles for grammar and research. If your first 3 are up to par, your assignment limit will increase to 10 articles. Demand Media is constantly reviewing their writers’ work and if they see that you are consistently submitting top-notch stuff, you’ll be eligible for an even higher article limit.

MORE: Money help starts here…

Demand Media is upfront about the pay rates for each assignment so you know how much you will earn before starting. The pay range for each article varies depending on the nature of the work, word count and the publishing site.

The company pays freelancers through residual revenue sharing or upfront flat-fee payments, depending on the job. For example, blogs and potentially high-traffic article topics earn residual income for authors over time, while other article topics, copyediting jobs, video projects and title selection and editing jobs generate flat-fee payments for freelancers.
